LifeLock™ Home Title Monitoring helps by notifying you of changes made to your home title at the County Recorder's Office* so you can take necessary action to protect your home title.

Most counties update their data weekly. However it can take several weeks before a newly recorded home title deed document is made available to our system.

If you recently purchased a property but it was not listed in the home title tab in the LifeLock portal, we recommend revisiting the home title tab after some time or contacting the County Recorder's Office.

Adding a missing property

This feature will assist you in adding a property that you believe belongs to you that we could not auto-discover based on your Social Security Number and Name. Once you add the property, we will verify ownership and then start monitoring this address for you against identity fraud, should we detect any. The property will be in a pending verification state when we verify your ownership in country records, and it will take up to a week for this process to complete.

Using this feature, we can add up to 10 properties at any given time in pending verification status that you believe belong to you, including properties under a Trust or Business name. If you wish to add more properties that belong to you, you must wait for us to complete verification on existing properties. Please add the address shown in the county records to increase the chances of successful verification.

Suppose you are still unable to add a missing property. Below might be some of the issues.

  1. The county recorder's office might need to update records that accurately reflect your ownership. For instance, you could be one of the trustees on the property, but the county's records might need to reflect this.

  2. The county might not have your name or SSN associated with the property you own.

  3. The address in county records is different than what you own. For Example: When a city expands, your street name or postal code might change, and the county might still have the old address associated with you.

We cannot verify your ownership in the above scenarios, and you will have to contact the county to update their records. Once the county records are updated, we can auto-detect it, or you can successfully add this property to home title monitoring.

Remove a property that doesn’t belong to you

This feature will assist you in removing a property that doesn't belong to you or that you have already sold in the past, including property under a Trust or Business name.

When removing a property, please select the exact property you wish to remove, and we will stop monitoring the property for you.

You can remove multiple properties using this feature unless they are in a pending verification state. If you want to remove a property in the pending verification state, you must wait for us to complete the verification process.

Who is the County Recorder?

In every state in the U.S., a local government official maintains property records for their area. This official is often known as the County Recorder, although in some states may be called the Recorder of Deeds, Registrar of Deeds, or some similar title.

When you buy a house, the document that transfers ownership to you (a "deed") is delivered to the County Recorder to be added to the public record - a process known as "recording." In addition to recording transfer deeds, the County Recorder also records other documents that affect a person's rights in a property, such as mortgages, liens, judgments, and easements. These official records help buyers, sellers, and other interested parties establish who has a legal interest in a particular property.

In your state, the office that maintains real estate records could be known as a county recorder, registrar of deeds, clerk of the court, or some other government agency.

Why are these notifications important?

Your home and property** are assets. If an identity thief assumes your identity, they may be able to:

  • Divert your mortgage payments to their own accounts

  • Take out a new loan against your property

  • Sell a property in your name

  • Place a lien on your property in an attempt to collect a debt you did not initiate

What are the limitations?

Home Title Monitoring relies on the information from the county recorder's office to provide you with notifications. This could result in delays, data being unavailable, and also in the following situations:

  • Recent activity made on your property** will not be available until they are processed by the recorder's office*.

  • If your property is held under a different name, such as your maiden name, married name, or nickname, we may not identify your property. In certain scenarios, such as tax liens, eminent domain, abandoned property, or public projects, the county may temporarily take ownership of the property, and we will not be able to associate this property with you.

The property I've owned for a significant amount of time wasn't found.

Our system identifies properties you may own by searching public property transfer and property tax records for your personal information. If there is not an exact match, our system may not recognize you as an owner of the property. This can happen if, for example:

  • Your property is held in a Trust or owned by limited liability companies(LLC), and your SSN is not associated with this record. In that case, our system may not recognize you as a beneficiary of the Trust or someone who owns or manages the LLC; or 

  • The property address is not associated with you because you have not used that address on any records we use to identify you.

**Home Title Monitoring feature includes your home, second home, rental home, or other properties where you have an ownership interest. However, we would not be able to monitor empty lots of land or mobile homes for you.
