Request a fraud alert
For United States
You can request a one-year fraud alert by calling one of the three credit bureaus. The alert expires one year from the date you request it. If you want to maintain the alert, you need to call once a year to submit a new request. The credit bureau you call should alert the other two to your request, so you should only need to make one call per year.
The fraud alert phone numbers for the credit bureaus are as follows:
- TransUnion: 1-800-680-7289
- Experian: 1-888-397-3742
- Equifax: 1-888-766-0008
You can also file a seven-year alert by mailing a copy of a police report to the credit bureaus.

For Canada
There are two types of Fraud Alerts available in Canada: Identity Alert and Fraud Warning. An Identity Alert allows a consumer to place a statement and phone number on their credit report. Based on Province, lenders and creditors are either legally required or encouraged to call the stated phone number on the file prior to extending credit. A Fraud Warning is similar but is only for consumers that have been a victim of identity theft.
You can request an Identity Alert or Fraud Warning by calling the credit bureaus. The alert expires every six years. If you want to maintain the alert, you will need to call every six years to submit a new request. You will need to call each bureau to request the alert be placed.
The phone numbers for the credit bureaus are as follows:
- TransUnion: 1-800-663-9980
- Equifax: 1-800-465-7166
To remove or update the phone number on an alert, you must submit a written request. Additional details can be found online at:
